What Is Combed Ringspun Cotton? The Fabric Behind Epic Fits' Softness

What Is Combed Ringspun Cotton? The Fabric Behind Epic Fits' Softness

You know the tee. It felt great in the store, then three washes later it's fuzzy across the chest, stiff at the hem, and the collar has gone wavy. On a bigger frame, every flaw shows.

Most of the time, the problem isn't the cut. It's the yarn. So what is combed ringspun cotton, and why do premium tees keep putting it on the label? This guide covers how it's made, how it stacks up against regular cotton, and why we build our shirts on it.

Combed Ringspun Cotton Is Cotton Cleaned Up and Twisted Tight

Combed ringspun cotton is cotton that goes through two extra steps before it becomes fabric. First, the fibers are combed to pull out short, broken pieces and leftover debris. Then the long fibers that remain are spun on a ring frame, which twists and thins them into a fine, tight, smooth yarn.

Each step does a different job:

Combing: cleans the cotton, so there are fewer short fibers to turn into fuzz and pills.

Ring spinning: shapes the yarn, packing the fibers tight so the thread comes out stronger and smoother.

Plenty of tees are ringspun but never combed, and they still carry some rough texture. When a label says "combed ringspun," you're getting both.

How Combed Ringspun Cotton Is Made

The steps between the field and your shirt decide how it feels a year later.

  1. Cleaning and carding: the raw cotton gets cleaned, then run through wire brushes that line the fibers up loosely.
  2. Combing: fine-toothed combs strip out short fibers and leftover debris. A good share of the fiber gets set aside, which is part of why it costs more.
  3. Ring spinning: the long, clean fibers get drawn out and twisted again and again into a thin, even yarn.
  4. Knitting: that yarn gets knit into jersey, the soft, stretchy knit used for most T-shirts.

Regular cotton usually skips combing and uses open-end spinning instead. It's faster and cheaper, but it makes a looser, bulkier yarn with more loose fiber ends poking out.

Ringspun Cotton vs Regular Cotton: What Changes in Your Shirt

Ringspun cotton vs regular cotton comes down to how the yarn is built. The difference shows up on day one and on day one hundred.

Feature Regular cotton Combed ringspun
Fiber prep Short fibers left in Short fibers combed out
Spinning Open-end, fast and loose Ring spun, slower and tighter
Feel Coarser, a little scratchy Smooth and soft from the first wear
Pilling Pills sooner Pills less
After washing Gets stiff, loses shape faster Stays smooth, holds its shape longer
Price Lower Higher

If you wear tees most days, that gap adds up fast.

Why Combed Ringspun Cotton Matters More on a Bigger Frame

A bigger frame asks more of a shirt: more fabric across the chest and back, more stretch at the shoulders, and more movement all day. The yarn has to carry all of that.

  • More surface, more friction: your chest and arms rub against seatbelts, bags, and desks all day, and fewer loose fibers means less pilling in those spots.
  • Drape instead of cling: fine, tight yarn makes a smoother knit that hangs clean over your stomach instead of grabbing at it.
  • Shape across the shoulders: stronger yarn bounces back after a long day, so the shirt doesn't sag where it needs to sit right.
  • A collar that stays put: a neckline built on tight yarn has a better shot at staying flat instead of going wavy.

Fabric is only half the fit, though. Our guide to choosing t-shirts for your body type covers what to check across the chest, shoulders, and length.

Combed Ringspun Cotton T-Shirts Are Worth It for Daily Wear

So, is combed ringspun cotton good for t-shirts? Yes. A combed ringspun cotton T-shirt feels softer, pills less, and keeps its look through more washes than a regular cotton tee.

It does come with trade-offs:

It costs more: combing sets fiber aside and ring spinning is slower, so the shirt carries a higher price.

Pure cotton can still shrink: a 100% cotton tee can shrink in a hot dryer, however well it's spun.

It's not a performance fabric: cotton soaks up sweat instead of pulling it away, so it's not the pick for a hard workout.

When you shop, look for "combed" and "ringspun" named together, check the blend, and see whether the brand lists a shrinkage number. For necklines and pack value side by side, see our breakdown of the best men's t-shirts.

The 60/40 Blend Behind Epic Fits' Softness

Our crew neck t-shirts are made from 60% combed ringspun cotton and 40% polyester jersey. That's why it feels soft out of the box and fits the same months later.

Each fiber has a job. The cotton brings softness and breathability against your skin. The polyester adds strength and easy stretch, and it helps the shirt hold its shape. Together, they keep shrinkage to 5% or less on a low-heat dryer setting, so the size you order is the size you keep.

The same 60/40 blend runs across most of our line:

Style Best for
Crew Neck Everyday wear, the base of your rotation
Curved Hem Crew Neck Wearing untucked, layering
V-Neck Solo or under an open collar
Long Sleeve Crew Neck Cooler days, layering
Long Sleeve Henley Dressing up or down
Polo A sharper look with tee comfort

Active Tech is the one exception. It's 87% polyester and 13% spandex, a moisture-wicking, quick-drying fabric built for the workouts cotton isn't made for.

The build backs up the fabric: a classic side seam that keeps its shape, a soft screen-printed tag, and a contemporary athletic cut that's tailored through the chest and shoulders and relaxed through the body. If you wear your tees untucked, the curved hem crew neck gives you the same blend with a hem that sits cleaner over the waist.

How to Keep Combed Ringspun Cotton Soft

Good yarn lasts longer when you treat it right:

  • Wash cold with like colors: cold water is easier on the fibers and keeps colors from bleeding.
  • Tumble dry low or lay flat: high heat is what shrinks cotton and wears it down.
  • Iron on low heat if needed: most jersey tees won't need it.
  • Skip the bleach: it breaks down the fibers and takes the softness with it.

If your shirt doesn't fit right or wears out too soon, our 100-Day Guarantee covers a free replacement.

Softness Starts at the Yarn

Frequently Asked Questions

Is combed ringspun cotton good for t-shirts?

Yes. Combing removes short fibers, and ring spinning makes a tight, smooth yarn, so the shirt feels softer, pills less, and keeps its shape through more washes than regular cotton.

What makes combed ringspun cotton different from regular cotton?

Two extra steps. It's combed to remove short fibers and debris, then spun on a ring frame into a fine, tight yarn. Regular cotton usually skips combing and uses faster open-end spinning, which leaves a coarser yarn with more loose ends.

Does combed ringspun cotton shrink?

Pure cotton can shrink in high heat; however, it's spun. Blending in polyester helps. Our 60/40 blend shrinks 5% or less on a low-heat dryer setting.

Does combed ringspun cotton pill?

Far less than regular cotton. Pills form when short fibers work loose and ball up. Combing pulls most of those fibers out before spinning, so there's less left to pill.

Is combed ringspun cotton breathable?

Yes. Cotton lets air move through it and feels cool against your skin. It soaks up sweat instead of wicking it, though, so for hard workouts, a performance tee like Active Tech is the better pick.
