Do T-Shirts Shrink? How to Keep Yours From Losing Their Shape

Do T-Shirts Shrink? How to Keep Yours From Losing Their Shape

You finally find a tee that fits your shoulders and chest. One trip through the dryer later, the hem sits above your belt, the sleeves grip your arms, and the collar has gone wavy. Now it's a sleep shirt.

So, do t-shirts shrink? Most do, at least a little. For bigger guys, that little bit matters, because you don't have spare room to give up. The good news is that shrinkage isn't luck. It comes down to two things you control: what the shirt is made of and how you wash and dry it.

How Much T-Shirts Shrink Comes Down to the Fabric

Cotton is the main reason T-shirts shrink. Polyester barely moves in a normal wash. Blends land in between, and that's where most good tees live.

Fabric Shrink risk What to expect
100% cotton High Can lose noticeable length and width, mostly in the first few washes
Cotton/polyester blend (like 60/40) Low Small, steady change when washed cold and dried low
Polyester/spandex performance Very low Holds its size, but high heat can wear out the stretch

Most shrinkage shows up in the first wash or two. If a tee still fits after a few washes, it'll keep fitting as long as your routine stays the same.

Why Some T-Shirts Shrink After Washing and Others Don't

Some t-shirts shrink after washing because their cotton fibers were stretched during making and never fully settled. When cotton is spun into yarn and knit into fabric, the fibers get pulled tight and held there. Laundry lets them relax back to their natural, shorter length.

Three things trigger that relaxing:

  • Heat: hot water and a hot dryer relax cotton faster than anything else.
  • Water: cotton soaks it up and swells, then pulls tighter as it dries.
  • Tumbling: the washer and dryer pack the knit closer together, so the shirt gets shorter.

That's why two tees in the same load can come out so differently. Polyester doesn't soak up water the way cotton does, so a blend keeps its size better than 100% cotton. Build matters too: a classic side seam and a well-made collar give the shirt a frame that holds its shape.

Shrinkage Hits Bigger Frames Harder

A tee that loses half an inch on a slim guy might still pass. On a bigger frame, the same loss shows up right where you notice it most:

Length: the hem pulls up over your waistband and rides up when you reach or sit.

Chest and shoulders: the fit goes from tailored to tight, and the fabric starts pulling across the front.

Sleeves: they climb higher and grip bigger arms instead of sitting clean.

Collar: a neckline that ripples or warps throws off the whole look.

So a tee that fits on day one isn't enough. You want one that still fits on wash twenty. If you're between sizes, the complete size guide walks through what to check before you order.

How to Stop T-Shirts From Shrinking

Here's how to stop T-shirts from shrinking without adding time to laundry day.

  1. Wash cold: cold water cleans everyday sweat and dirt without relaxing cotton the way hot water does.
  2. Turn tees inside out: less rubbing on the outside keeps the fabric smooth and the color rich.
  3. Wash with like colors and weights: heavy jeans and towels beat up a soft tee in the drum.
  4. Leave room in the machine: a packed drum twists shirts out of shape.
  5. Dry on low or lay flat: high heat does most of the shrinking, so low heat or a flat dry keeps size steady.
  6. Pull them out on time: take tees out while slightly damp and let them finish flat instead of baking in a hot drum.
  7. Skip the bleach: it breaks down fibers and leaves fabric thin and stiff.

How to Keep a T-Shirt From Losing Its Shape

Stretching ruins fit too: a baggy collar, a flared hem, a sagging body. Different problem, different fixes.

Protect the Collar

Pull shirts on and off by the body, not by tugging the neckline. Never hang a wet tee by the collar, since the weight of the water stretches it out. Lay it flat instead.

Fold, Don't Hang

Hangers leave bumps in the shoulders, and the shirt's own weight slowly pulls the body longer. Fold your tees and stack them instead.

Rotate Your Stack

Wearing and washing the same two shirts every week wears them out fast. A deeper rotation spreads out the wear, so each tee keeps its shape longer.

How Epic Fits Tees Are Built to Hold Their Shape

Good habits help any shirt, but they can't save a tee that's built to fail. We made ours for guys who are done replacing shirts every few months. Our family still packs every order by hand, and every purchase donates one item to someone in need.

Crew Neck

Our Crew Necks keep the fit you bought thanks to a 60% combed ringspun cotton and 40% polyester jersey. The cotton brings the softness, and the polyester helps the shirt keep its size. Shrinkage stays at 5% or less on a low-heat dryer setting. The neckline is built a bit snug, so it holds its shape instead of stretching out, and the classic side seam keeps the body sitting straight.

Active Tech Tee

For gym days and hot weather, the Active Tech Tee moves with you, wicks sweat, and dries fast. It's 87% polyester and 13% spandex, with shrinkage at 5% or less on low heat. Wash it cold and keep it away from high heat to protect the stretch.

A Tee That Still Fits on Wash Twenty

Fabric and heat decide your fit, so a cotton-poly blend washed cold and dried low gives you a tee that fits the same on wash twenty as it did on day one.

If length is where you lose fit first, the Curved Hem Crew Necks have a slightly dropped, curved hem that sits clean over your waist.

Stock up in the Pack Builder and save up to 45%, so every tee in your rotation gets a rest between washes.

Stay Epic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do t-shirts shrink every time you wash them?

No. Most shrinking happens in the first wash or two, when the fibers relax for the first time. After that, a tee washed cold and dried low stays close to the same size. Washing hot or drying on high can still pull it smaller later on.

Does 60% cotton 40% polyester shrink?

A little. The cotton can still relax with heat, but the polyester holds it back, so a 60/40 tee shrinks far less than 100% cotton. Our 60/40 tees stay at 5% or less on a low-heat dryer setting.

Should I size up in case my t-shirt shrinks?

Not with a low-shrink blend. Sizing up leaves extra fabric hanging loose in the shoulders and body. Buy the size that fits now and protect it with cold washes and low heat. If it doesn't fit right or wears out too soon, our 100-Day Guarantee gets you a free replacement.

Can you unshrink a t-shirt that got too small?

Sometimes, a little. Soak it in lukewarm water with a spoonful of hair conditioner for about 30 minutes, press out the water without wringing, gently stretch it, and let it dry flat. It won't bring back a full size, but it can win back some length.

Why won't my t-shirt hold shape after wash and dry?

Usually it's heat, hangers, or thin fabric. Dry low, fold instead of hang, and pick a blend with a classic side seam and a snug collar.
